Review:

For a very long time I have had Slaughterhouse-Five on my TBR list. I've heard dozens of people tell me how awesome it is and how any sci-fi or fantasy nerd needs to read it.

Naturally, I was looking forward to tearing through this one and rather quickly found myself quite disappointed. The writing style is very odd. The author is trying to convey the idea that time isn't always experienced in a linear fashion and the protagonist, having been abducted by an alien species, recounts his own life through this lens.

The issue I found is that Vonnegut repeatedly uses phrases that quickly become annoying and it is hard to follow the story due to the nature of jumping time constantly. I also don't particularly enjoy his prose style, but that's a matter of personal taste (which I suppose all of these things are).

The book is very short and I read it in one sitting, but I didn't really enjoy it, if that wasn't clear already. I respect Vonnegut for being a pioneer of the genre and will read some of his other works, in hopes that this one was an anomaly. However, I've often found that most authors have a particular style of prose and storytelling that sticks with them through most of their works, so I'm a bit skeptical that his other books will be better.

If you're a hardcore sci-fi nerd and haven't read this one, I suppose it's worth a shot, but otherwise, I wouldn't recommend it personally. There are just too many good books in the world to waste time on sub-par works, in my opinion.

I know this review likely upsets some Kurt Vonnegut fans, but I wanted to share my honest perspective and not hold anything back.
