Embracing Discomfort
What do you do when things get uncomfortable?
This is a questions worth meditating on. Our bodies literally seek homeostasis - the state of “normal.” That is, we are wired to seek stability and comfort is a part of stability.
I was recently working on writing some Python code and couldn’t for the life of me figure out the solution. It was frustrating. I researched answers for half an hour and still couldn’t figure it out.
Everything inside me wanted to take the path to an easy answer rather than hang in there with the discomfort. To go to Claude and just have it fix the code.
But… that’s not how you grow. You don’t find growth in the easy path. You don’t truly learn when things are easy. No, those things come through obstacles that bring discomfort.
As the Stoics would say The thing that is in the way becomes the way.
However, simply knowing the truth isn't enough. We have to apply it to our lives and that's often easier said than done.
I'm working on digging into discomfort with curiosity. One step at a time.
